The Flipped Learning Model

In the “flipped learning model”, students spend portions of their day doing digital content online made by their teachers. These digital materials, often video lessons, are precursory, introductory information to a lesson – the basics. It allows the teacher to digitally provide the “sit and get” portion of a lesson. Students then take low-stakes quizzes to gauge understanding and practice with the content.

All of this happens before the in-person lesson. Students have 90 minutes of dedicated study hall time to complete their pre-learning, which allows teachers to take the class much deeper into the content. In a STEM setting, this means more labs. In a humanities setting, this means more discussion, debate, and/or individual teacher feedback on essay writing. The added efficiency of classroom learning time means students do more extensive projects, making regular real-world applications of the materials.

Winter and Summer Intensives
Intensives are 2-week periods in the year where students deeply study a concept or topic. The purpose of these timeframes is to support deeper learning experiences while also shaking up the day-to-day learning routines. Intensives are thoughtfully scheduled and designed at critical parts of the year. The teaching and learning become more project-based and applied.
